Frequently asked questions

What do you mean by end-to-end encryption?

It means that data is encrypted before leaving the sender, and is not decrypted until after it has been downloaded by the receiver.

Do I need to use any kind of software or browser plug-in in order to use Encrypted File Drop?

No, you only need a reasonably modern web browser with javascript enabled.

What encryption algorithms are used?

Data is encrypted using a combination of 4096 bit RSA asymmetric encryption and 256 bit AES-GCM symmetric encryption.

How is data integrity ensured?

Data integrity is ensured by computing SHA-256 checksums upon sending and upon delivery.

I forgot the password to my key, can you recover it for me?

It is not possible to recover your key password, and this is by design. If you have forgotten your password, you need to create a new key. Undelivered data must then be considered as lost.

Where is my data stored?

All files are encrypted before leaving the client browser, and then stored in Scaleway's data center in Paris, France.

I forgot to download my files before the end of the retention time. Can you recover it?

No, the data is permanently deleted.

Are metadata, such as file names, also encrypted?

Yes, file names as well as checksums are encrypted along with the content.
